About Us

ZenPlayTime is a small, family-run toy store in Miami, built on one idea: the right toy at the right stage is a conversation between you and your child. We choose the toys. You get the conversation.

Why we started

I'm Zenia García, founder of ZenPlayTime and mother of two. I've spent the past seven years in early childhood education, and most of that time answering the same question from parents: what should my child be playing with right now? The honest answer is rarely "more". It's usually one or two well-made things that match what their brain and hands are ready for, and a parent who knows how to play alongside them.

That's what this store is. Every product here was chosen for a specific developmental stage and a specific skill, and every product page tells you what your child practices with it and how to play together.

How we choose

We say no far more often than yes. To make it into the catalog a toy has to pass five checks:

  • It has a developmental job. Grasping, posting, stacking, sorting, pretending, balancing. If we can't name the skill, it doesn't go in.
  • It fits a real stage. We organize by month for babies and by year for toddlers and preschoolers because a nine-month-old and a fifteen-month-old need different things.
  • It is made from materials we'd put in our own children's mouths. Natural wood, food-grade silicone, organic cotton, water-based finishes.
  • It is safety-tested to US standards. Every brand we carry certifies its toys to ASTM F963 and holds a Children's Product Certificate. Read how that works.
  • It ships from the United States, in days, not weeks.

What we believe

Play is learning. Ninety percent of brain growth happens before age five, and most of it happens through play. We don't sell "educational" toys as a category; we believe the good ones all are.

Parents are the toy. A wooden ring in a baby's hand is fine. A wooden ring in a baby's hand with you naming it, hiding it, and rolling it back is where development happens. Our guides are written for you, not for the box.

Less, chosen well. A short shelf of open-ended toys beats a room full of plastic that does one thing. We'd rather you buy one thing from us that gets used for a year than three that get forgotten.

Age-appropriate is a safety issue, not a marketing phrase. Small parts, cords and magnets are graded honestly on every page.

Who's behind it

Zenia curates the catalog, writes the play guides and the blog, and answers your questions. Karel, her husband, runs the store, the shipping and the boring parts. Our two children are the original test lab.
